How it works
REX Auctions is a car auction without the auction house. The car stays with its owner from listing to handover; we run the bidding, hold the buyer's money until the car is collected, and pay the seller.
Fees
Sellers pay 3% of the sale price, minimum £50, and nothing else. No entry fee, no fee to relist an unsold car, no fee to withdraw before the reserve is met. The commission is deducted from the payout.
Buyers pay the hammer price and nothing else. No buyer's premium, no online fee, no admin fee. The only money touched before a sale is a refundable deposit hold on your card, explained below.
Buying
- Register with your email and mobile number and confirm your email address. Add a card to your account — the card details are held by our payment provider, never by us.
- Find a car. Every listing shows the seller's photos, the known issues, the run condition, the category, the town it is in and how far that is from you. If the seller offers viewings, message them to arrange one.
- Register to bid on that car. This places a hold of £50 (cars valued under £3,500) or £100 on your card. Nothing is charged: the hold is released when the auction ends for you, and is only taken if you win and do not pay. You can register on as many cars as you like — each has its own hold.
- Bid. Bidding starts at £50. Use the + and − buttons to choose your bid; the steps are £50, then £100 above £5,000 and £200 above £10,000. Every bid is yours alone — there is no automatic bidding, so be at the screen for the close.
- Win. When the countdown reaches zero the highest bid wins, provided it meets the seller's reserve. You then have 2 working days to pay in full through our payment provider, and 5 working days from the auction end to collect the car.
- Collect. Once you have paid, the seller's phone number and the car's full address are shown to you. Arrange a time, go and see the car, and inspect it before you confirm collection. Your confirmation releases the seller's money and makes the sale final.
Selling
- Register and set up payouts — a one-time, five-minute step with our payment provider so we can pay you when your car sells. This is also how we confirm you are who you say you are.
- List the car. The form saves section by section: the car's details, its condition and known issues, at least six photos (front, rear, both sides, dashboard showing the mileage, engine bay), where it is kept, your valuation and, optionally, a reserve price and a Buy Now price.
- Pick a closing slot. Auctions close on weekdays between 09:00 and 18:00, five minutes apart, one car per slot. Bidding opens as soon as you publish — a car listed on Monday for a Thursday slot takes bids all week.
- Wait for the close. You can lower your reserve or Buy Now price at any time, and raise them until a bid meets the reserve. You can withdraw the car until a bid meets the reserve; after that the sale is committed.
- Hand over the car. When the buyer has paid we show you their phone number. Arrange collection. Do not hand over the keys until the buyer has confirmed collection on the site — that confirmation is what releases your money, exactly as you would wait for a bank transfer to land in a private sale.
- Get paid. The sale price minus our commission is paid to your bank account by our payment provider.
The rules of the auction
- Start price. Every auction starts at £50.
- Reserve. A seller may set a hidden reserve. Bidders see whether it has been met, never the amount. If the auction ends with the highest bid below the reserve, that bid stands as an offer to the seller until the end of the next working day; the seller may accept it, decline it, or make a counter-offer, and the buyer may counter back — up to three counters each.
- Buy Now. A seller may set a Buy Now price. Any registered bidder can end the auction at once by paying it, for as long as bidding is below it. A bid at or above the Buy Now price removes it.
- Extension. A bid placed in the last 20 seconds moves the end to 20 seconds after that bid, as many times as it takes. The auction ends when 20 seconds pass with no new bid.
- Bids are binding. Each bid records the version of our terms you accepted. A winning bidder who does not pay within 2 working days forfeits their deposit, which is paid to the seller as compensation, and the car is relisted.
- Time. All times are UK time. Deadlines in working days skip weekends and English bank holidays.
If something goes wrong
- The car is not as described. Do not confirm collection. Open a dispute from the car's page; the seller's payout stays frozen. You and the seller can agree an outcome — a price reduction, or a full refund — and we carry it out. If you cannot agree, we decide on the evidence you both provide.
- The buyer took the car but has not confirmed. This is why we ask sellers not to hand over the keys first. If it happens, open a dispute from the car's page and we will chase the buyer.
- The seller cannot deliver. You are refunded in full and the seller's account is suspended.
- Anything else — contact us.
The full terms and conditions apply to every bid and sale.
